Most people use MilkeShape 3D, there are some good tutorials at http://www.vlatitude.com/tutorials.php but I myself have never modeled.

So true, I've never modeled but I've made prefabs in Hammer using brushes...wow it takes forever. I'm still not even done with that prefab yet lol. ;)
